U.S. President Donald Trump has officially modified the national security tariffs under Section 232 for certain aluminum, steel, and copper imports, as announced by the White House on Monday. The adjustments, effective starting June 8, involve reducing tariffs on specific steel and aluminum derivative products, such as various agricultural machinery and residential heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment, from 25 per cent to 15 per cent.

In accordance with the proclamation, mobile industrial equipment like bulldozers and forklifts will now face a 15 per cent tariff when imported from trade deal countries eligible for such treatment, as per the White House statement. Additionally, foreign companies can qualify for a 10 per cent tariff if a minimum of 85 per cent of their capital equipment consists of U.S. melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminum by weight.

The update introduces two new categories of steel and aluminum derivative import products that will be subjected to 25 per cent duties: steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates. These tariff changes will come into effect for goods imported or withdrawn from bonded warehouses after 12:01 a.m. ET on June 8 and will remain in effect until December 31, 2027, aiming to stimulate immediate investments that support the nation’s industrial base growth.
