Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced a state of emergency following the devastating impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi, resulting in the loss of at least 114 lives and leaving 127 individuals unaccounted for in central provinces. This natural disaster, the most fatal in the country this year, primarily led to fatalities due to drowning in flash floods, particularly affecting Cebu.

Nearly two million people were affected by the typhoon, with over 560,000 villagers displaced, including around 450,000 individuals relocated to emergency shelters. The emergency declaration enables the government to expedite fund allocation and prevent food hoarding and price inflation.

Kalmaegi moved away from western Palawan province into the South China Sea with sustained winds reaching up to 130 km/h and gusts up to 180 km/h. The majority of casualties were reported in Cebu, where flash floods and swollen waterways wreaked havoc, prompting residents to seek refuge on rooftops.

The calamity resulted in 49 drowning deaths, along with fatalities from landslides and falling debris in Cebu. Various individuals remain missing in Cebu, Negros Occidental, and Negros Oriental, neighboring provinces to Cebu. Concerns have been raised over the impact of years of quarrying on nearby rivers and substandard flood control projects exacerbating the situation.

Despite challenges, rescue efforts have been ongoing, with volunteers and authorities working tirelessly to assist affected residents. The devastation caused by Kalmaegi has highlighted the importance of robust disaster preparedness and response measures in disaster-prone regions like the Philippines.

As Kalmaegi heads towards Vietnam and Thailand, evacuations and safety measures have been implemented in anticipation of the storm’s impact. With a history of frequent typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic activity, the Philippines remains vigilant in its disaster management efforts to mitigate the effects of such natural calamities.
