Zellers’ new proprietors are gearing up to extend the revamped brand to Ontario, with some adjustments in store. A fresh discount outlet is slated to debut near Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall on June 18th, followed by another at Windsor’s Tecumseh Mall in July. Much like the Edmonton branch that kickstarted the brand’s revival last year, these stores will feature a range of products including apparel, home items, luggage, and seasonal goods.

The Ontario outlets will also introduce snack items and toys, a category initially considered challenging to compete in against retail giants like Walmart and Amazon. Zellers’ chief operating officer, Joey Benitah, altered his stance on including toys after a trial run at the Edmonton location proved successful, with toys emerging as top sellers.

The Benitah family, now in possession of the brand, acquired the rights to the nearly century-old Zellers name following the closure of its former owner, Hudson’s Bay. The family also oversees Fairweather and International Clothiers apparel stores, as well as home goods retailer Wyrth.

Over the years, Zellers, a discount department store with a long history, has faced closure and resurrection multiple times. Despite being less than a year into the relaunch under new ownership, the current owners have ambitious plans for national expansion.

In the Windsor region, Zellers will be situated at Tecumseh Mall, which previously housed a Zellers store until 2013. Locals eagerly anticipate its return, reminiscing about the store’s past presence. Zellers will join various retail outlets near Tecumseh Road and Lauzon Road, including franchises like Giant Tiger, Walmart, and a future Costco location.

Ryan Donally, president and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Chamber of Commerce, views Zellers’ return to Windsor as a positive development for the area, potentially boosting foot traffic and service offerings for customers. The Windsor-Essex residents can look forward to enhanced choices and competition, leading to improved service standards.

Tecumseh Mall’s spokesperson expressed excitement about Zellers’ upcoming return, highlighting the sentimental value the brand holds for many customers in the Windsor area. The return of Zellers to Tecumseh Mall is perceived as a fitting and anticipated addition to the property.
