Far-right figure Tommy Robinson was acquitted on Tuesday of violating British counterterrorism laws by refusing to provide his phone’s passcode during a border stop in July 2024. Robinson, also known as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is a prominent anti-immigration campaigner in the UK. The incident occurred when he was stopped by police at the Channel Tunnel train terminal in southeast England.

During the trial, prosecutors argued at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court that Robinson’s behavior, driving a high-value vehicle, and last-minute travel plans to Spain raised suspicions among the officers. When asked to unlock his phone, Robinson, claiming to be a journalist with confidential material on the device, declined to provide the passcode.

In delivering the verdict, Judge Sam Goozee criticized the police for detaining Robinson based on his political views, deeming the stop unlawful. Following the ruling, Robinson expressed gratitude to Elon Musk for supporting his legal defense. Musk, known for endorsing Robinson’s posts and participating in a recent London rally organized by Robinson, has been a vocal ally.

Robinson has alleged governmental targeting for whistleblowing but faces criticism for his far-right affiliations and criminal history. He hailed the court’s decision as vindication of his stance, asserting that he was singled out due to his political beliefs and journalistic activities.
