Following the passing of the owners of Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, John Holer in 2018 and his wife Marie Holer in 2024, the future of the expansive property is uncertain. The 323-hectare estate, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, has been placed in a trust.

The park, which housed 30 beluga whales and other animals, faced a setback as their request to export the whales to China was denied by the federal government. Local residents express a desire for a new amusement park on the property, preferably without animal attractions.

Residents like Dominic Cliffe, who grew up visiting Marineland, suggest repurposing the site as a roller-coaster park while preserving its existing infrastructure. Concerns about the local economy without a park are raised by individuals like Ashley Mercer, who recalls the joy of working at Marineland and hopes the rides can be salvaged by future owners.

Niagara Falls residents, including Devon Herrington and Kyler Sanderson, envision a revamped amusement park experience that focuses more on education and less on animal spectacles. They propose integrating posters, animatronics, and video displays to provide an interactive and educational experience.

Vicki Grandits and others support transforming the space into a new theme park to boost the local economy and job market. Mayor Jim Diodati shares the sentiment of creating a world-class attraction at the Marineland estate without animal attractions.

While nostalgia for Marineland’s past remains, sentiments have shifted towards creating a modern amusement park that caters to a diverse audience while respecting animal welfare. The community looks forward to new owners revitalizing the property and preserving the legacy of Marineland in a revamped form.
