Renowned Grammy-winning R&B artist Peabo Bryson, known for his iconic Disney duets “Beauty and the Beast” with Céline Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle from Aladdin, has passed away at the age of 75.
In a statement, Bryson’s family expressed their profound sorrow at his loss but found solace in the love he received and the lives he touched with his voice and generosity. Bryson, celebrated internationally for his Disney classics, was also a prominent figure in the R&B genre, with hits like “Feel the Fire,” “I’m So Into You,” and “Can You Stop the Rain” throughout his five-decade-long career.
Dion, in a tribute post on X, extended her condolences to Bryson’s family, reminiscing about their collaboration on the duet and praising his talent and impact on her musical journey. The song “Beauty and the Beast,” penned by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, garnered multiple accolades including two Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards.
Born in South Carolina, Bryson, a singer, songwriter, and balladeer, worked with various record labels and became a sought-after duet partner in the music industry. His collaborations extended to artists like Minnie Riperton, Roberta Flack, Melissa Manchester, and Natalie Cole. Bryson’s musical journey began with his chart-topping hit “Do It With Feeling” in 1975, leading to further successes with songs like “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love” and “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again.”
In 2018, Bryson returned to the music scene with his album “Stand for Love,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. His most recent album, “Grace,” marked his 22nd studio release, showcasing his enduring talent and passion for music. Apart from his musical endeavors, Bryson also ventured into stage productions like “Raisin,” “The Wiz,” and “Porgy and Bess.”
After overcoming a heart attack in 2019, Bryson faced health complications, experiencing a stroke in late May and requiring medical attention. Colleagues and admirers, including comedian Loni Love, R&B artists Jody Watley and Kenny Lattimore, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, paid heartfelt tributes to the late music legend.
