U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the potential cancellation of a series of concerts marking the nation’s 250th anniversary due to multiple artists withdrawing. Trump hinted at the possibility of delivering a speech and hosting a rally instead, boasting about being a top attraction globally and drawing larger crowds than Elvis Presley without a guitar.

One of the latest artists to pull out from the Freedom 250 concerts, scheduled from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison. The concert series, aimed at celebrating the triumph of the American spirit, has faced criticism for allegedly glorifying Trump through various events like proposing his image on coins, his signature on bills, and a special passport featuring his face.

Aside from Bret Michaels, other musicians such as country singer Martina McBride and the funk and soul ensemble the Commodores have also withdrawn from the anniversary festivities. The evolving scenario surrounding the 250th anniversary celebrations has sparked questions about whether the focus is shifting towards a celebration of Trump’s legacy rather than America’s independence.
