Fans of spy films will have to be patient for the return of Agent 007 to cinemas, but in the meantime, a new video game promises to satisfy James Bond enthusiasts.

007 First Light launched this week on various gaming platforms and computers, achieving impressive global sales of 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours, as reported by IO Interactive, the Danish game development studio renowned for the Hitman series.

Here are the key highlights of 007 First Light and the reasons why it is being hailed as the top Bond game in years.

A Departure from GoldenEye

First Light marks the first significant James Bond video game release in over a decade, arriving nearly three decades after the iconic GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64.

While GoldenEye introduced first-person shooter gameplay outside the realm of personal computers, along with a popular multiplayer mode, First Light opts for a third-person perspective, focusing solely on a single-player experience with an original storyline rather than adapting from existing films or novels.

An Unconventional Origin Tale

The game commences with a youthful James Bond, portrayed by Irish actor Patrick Gibson, serving as a rookie aircrew member on a secretive mission in Iceland. Following a plane crash where Bond is the sole survivor, he is recruited by MI6 to recover a mysterious asset from a remote island base.

Subsequently, Bond is enlisted into MI6’s revived 00 program. Players witness his induction into the program alongside other trainees, embarking on global missions to master the art of espionage.

Set in the contemporary era, the game boldly addresses modern concerns about technology. Central to the new 00 program is THEIA, a quantum supercomputer leveraging artificial intelligence to monitor criminal syndicates globally and guide agents in the field.

The narrative explores the potential of AI to supplant human operatives, amidst the development of cutting-edge gadgets in the Q-Lab by MI6 agents.

THEIA’s creator, billionaire Sir Nicholas Webb, serves as a British, more refined counterpart to Elon Musk, accompanied by humanoid robots reminiscent of characters from a Bond movie intro, albeit with less subtlety.

Mission Focus on Espionage

In First Light, Bond assumes the role of a spy more than an assassin. The gameplay predominantly involves infiltrating large social settings to locate suspects during missions.

Early on, Bond is tasked with infiltrating a luxurious coastal hotel where elite socialites have gathered to witness a championship chess match. Players must devise strategies to gain entry, which may involve assuming the guise of a journalist by procuring a press badge and creating distractions using Bond’s Q-watch, like triggering a sprinkler system to divert a security guard.

Occasionally, players can employ Bond’s charisma and appearance to talk their way out of physical altercations.

When stealth and deception fail, confrontations with security personnel or armed adversaries become inevitable. Combat sequences are responsive and dynamic, allowing players to engage in hand-to-hand combat by swiftly executing punches, dodges, and parries, including utilizing objects in the environment to subdue opponents.

Cinematic Intensity

Almost every mission features intense firefights against heavily armed foes. Gunplay involving pistols and rifles
