The newest surprise for fans of Love Island isn’t happening in Fiji but in Canada. The 8th season of Love Island USA kicked off this week with an exciting lineup of singles ready to bring the anticipated heat and drama that viewers adore. However, Canadian fans looking to watch the season without cost are facing obstacles.
Although Crave is initially providing the first five episodes for free, viewers will soon require a Crave subscription to continue streaming the entire series as Bell Media has eliminated its CTV streaming app, shifting all its content to the subscription-based streaming service. This move has placed Love Island as the latest casualty behind a streaming paywall, prompting fans to debate if investing in a subscription is justified for a summer filled with text messages and re-couplings.
Expressing their disappointment, one TikTok user questioned, “Is CTV really not giving us free episodes this year???” while another on X platform inquired, “How are my Canadian baddies watching Love Island tonight because I refuse to pay for Crave.” Furthermore, another user asked, “Where am I supposed to watch Love Island for free???”
In a news release, Bell Media stated that the shift aims to enhance the streaming experience by consolidating all content in one platform. However, for devoted viewers who are not existing Bell or Crave subscribers, the change represents an additional monthly expense, with subscription fees starting at around $12 per month for a standard plan with ads.
Media analyst Wade Payson-Denney noted that it is not surprising to witness another major broadcaster following this trend, emphasizing the importance of meeting consumer preferences in the digital age. With the increasing shift towards streaming platforms over traditional television, migrating content to streaming services aligns with changing viewing habits.
This transition is likely geared towards capturing younger audiences, according to freelance entertainment reporter Saleah Blancaflor, despite concerns about rising streaming costs and fatigue among Gen Z viewers. Nonetheless, she anticipates high viewership numbers due to the unique allure of Love Island and the constant engagement it offers, creating a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) among fans eager to stay updated on the evolving storylines and contestant dynamics.
