The Quebec Liberal Party will begin its leadership race on January 12, 2026, following the end of Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. The new leader will be selected on March 14, 2026. Marc Tanguay, the Member of the National Assembly for LaFontaine, is currently the interim leader of the Official Opposition at the National Assembly, taking over after Rodriguez resigned last week amidst internal party turmoil.

Accusations have emerged regarding illegal campaign contributions made to secure Rodriguez’s leadership victory, prompting an investigation by Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, into the alleged pay-for-vote scheme. Rodriguez has denied any knowledge of these activities.

Prospective candidates interested in joining the leadership competition must submit their applications by February 13 and gather 750 signatures from eligible party members. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to enter the race, with a spending limit of $120,000 for the election campaign, excluding the initial deposit.
