Stephen Gogolev faced a challenging journey in figure skating due to persistent back injuries that almost led him to quit the sport. However, a remarkable comeback season has put him on the verge of qualifying for the Winter Olympics.
Gogolev clinched his maiden national title at the Canadian figure skating championships, marking a significant milestone in his resurgence. Expressing his emotions, he described the potential Olympic berth as a culmination of his hard-fought battle over the past years.
Performing to Sergei Rachmaninov’s “Piano Concerto No. 2,” the 21-year-old skater from Toronto executed two quad jumps and seven triples, accumulating a total score of 275.50 after an impressive free program.
Gogolev reminisced on the doubts and struggles he faced during his teenage years when back issues hindered his progress after being hailed as a rising star in Canadian men’s figure skating. Despite the setbacks, this season has seen him compete vigorously, particularly against fellow Canadian Roman Sadovsky.
The intense competition in Gatineau served as the final showdown between Gogolev and Sadovsky for a coveted spot in the Milan Cortina Winter Games. The pressure was palpable, with Gogolev acknowledging the weight of the moment as the deciding factor.

In the women’s event, Minsol Kwon led the short program standings, closely followed by Gabrielle Daleman and Sara-Maude Dupuis. Reigning champion Madeline Schizas faced a minor setback but remained in contention for the Olympic spot.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier showcased a stellar performance in the rhythm dance, securing the top spot with an impressive score. The duo, aiming for their third Olympic appearance, displayed exceptional skill and connection on the ice.
