Officers apprehended a 20-year-old individual believed to have thrown a Molotov cocktail at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco. Following the incident at Altman’s home, where an incendiary device was hurled, setting a gate on fire, the suspect fled on foot. Subsequently, law enforcement responded to reports of threats to burn down a different business in the city, where the same individual was identified and taken into custody.
OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, issued a statement confirming the targeted property as Altman’s residence and acknowledging threats made at their headquarters. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and OpenAI is cooperating with the investigation.
The arrested individual’s identity and motives remain undisclosed as authorities have not disclosed such details. OpenAI expressed gratitude for the swift response of the San Francisco Police Department and the city’s support in ensuring the safety of their staff.
Sam Altman, the co-founder and CEO, is a prominent figure in Silicon Valley, advocating for the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence. Notably, Altman was dismissed by OpenAI in 2023 due to communication issues with the board but was reinstated shortly afterward under a revised board structure.
The recent assault on Altman comes shortly after a detailed exposé by The New Yorker, raising concerns about the CEO and the company’s operations.
