The federal Conservative party is pushing for an independent investigation into the tragic mass shooting that took place in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The aim is to gain insight into the event and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Conservative MP Bob Zimmer, representing Tumbler Ridge, emphasized the importance of understanding the situation to avoid its recurrence. Similarly, B.C. Conservative MP Frank Caputo, also the party’s public safety critic, stressed the need for answers, healing, and preventive measures.

According to the Inquiries Act, the federal government has the authority to initiate an inquiry related to matters concerning the governance of Canada by appointing commissioners to address the issue.

While B.C. Premier David Eby pledged to utilize all available resources to address inquiries about the tragedy, he refrained from announcing a public inquiry, a move advocated by a local MLA.

The Conservatives highlighted that their proposed independent inquiry would complement existing investigations, focusing on aspects such as mental health, access to firearms, and support for victims’ families.

Key questions that the inquiry aims to address include the shooter’s access to weapons, mental health status, law enforcement response, utilization of artificial intelligence, and measures to assist and protect affected individuals.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed the government’s commitment to exploring all avenues to prevent future tragedies akin to the Tumbler Ridge incident.

The community is still grappling with the aftermath of the devastating events on February 10, involving 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar who perpetrated the violence before taking her own life. Authorities are investigating how Van Rootselaar obtained the firearms used in the attacks.

Efforts are also underway to hold OpenAI accountable for not flagging the shooter’s account, banned due to posts about gun violence. The tech company has since pledged to enhance its law enforcement referral protocol and cooperate with authorities.

Minister Evan Solomon and Premier Eby are scheduled to meet with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to discuss the company’s role in the tragedy.
