Prime Minister Mark Carney wrapped up his diplomatic visit to India with a positive tone, emphasizing the strong partnership potential between Canada and India. Speaking at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, Carney highlighted the progress towards a comprehensive economic partnership between the two countries, aiming for a full free trade deal.

Carney, alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is steering away from past sectoral deals to pursue a more ambitious trade agreement, amidst the challenges posed by the ongoing trade disputes, particularly influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. The leaders are scheduled to meet in Delhi to finalize several memorandums of understanding, including a possible agreement for Canada to supply uranium to India’s nuclear sector, marking a significant step in the free trade negotiations.

Acknowledging the changing global trade landscape, Carney emphasized the importance of Canada and India working closely together, moving beyond past tensions. Despite previous strains, Carney expressed optimism about forging a new era of collaboration, stressing that the economic activities between the two nations have untapped potential that should be explored further.

During his visit, Carney engaged in constructive discussions with key Indian business figures, including meetings with Tata Sons, aiming to attract increased investments into Canada. The visit also witnessed the facilitation of an agreement between Universities Canada and Indian educational institutions to enhance research collaborations and student exchanges.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to strengthen the educational ties between the two countries, focusing on quality and balanced relationships in higher education. The agreement aims to benefit both Canadian and Indian students through faculty exchanges and research partnerships in technology and artificial intelligence.

Despite the positive strides, challenges remain, notably concerning allegations of violent acts and foreign interference involving Indian agents in Canada. Carney’s visit comes amid calls for clarity on these issues, with concerns raised by the Sikh community. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand affirmed Canada’s commitment to addressing foreign interference and pledged to continue discussions with Indian counterparts regarding community concerns.

As the diplomatic visit concluded, both countries expressed a shared commitment to deepening their partnership and addressing mutual challenges, paving the way for a more robust and collaborative relationship between Canada and India.
