Residents and dog owners in Fredericton are rejoicing over the city’s latest move to grant permanent off-leash access to approximately six kilometers of trails at Killarney Lake Park from May to November annually. Drew Prudhomme, eager to spend quality time with his canine companion Kylo, expressed his enthusiasm for this decision, highlighting the convenience it offers for extended exercise outings. Last year, a successful five-month pilot project designated about four kilometers of the park’s trails as an off-leash area.

City officials have disclosed plans to extend the off-leash zone by an additional two kilometers, bringing it closer to the park’s parking facilities. However, this off-leash privilege will not be available during the winter months due to activities like cross-country skiing. David Seabrook, the city’s director of recreation, tourism, and culture, emphasized the need to maintain the trails’ integrity for various seasonal activities.

Acknowledging the positive reception from the public, the city is contemplating making this seasonal access a permanent fixture. Dog owners and non-dog owners alike have shown support for this initiative, appreciating the increased freedom it offers to four-legged companions. The proposed amendment to the bylaw is expected to be presented to the council for approval during a scheduled meeting in 2026.

Drew Prudhomme commended the responsible behavior of fellow dog owners he encountered during the previous season, noting their diligent supervision of their pets. Leah Thompson echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in dog owners’ accountability on the off-leash trails. She emphasized the importance of providing dogs with opportunities for joy and freedom, emphasizing the positive impact of the city’s decision on canine well-being.
