American actress and former model, Sally Kirkland, known for her performances in theater, television, and film, has passed away at the age of 84. Kirkland, who starred alongside Hollywood icons like Paul Newman and Robert Redford in “The Sting” and received an Oscar nomination for her role in the 1987 film “Anna,” died at a hospice in Palm Springs, California, according to her representative, Michael Greene.

Earlier this year, a GoFundMe campaign was set up by friends to assist with Kirkland’s medical expenses after she suffered fractures in four bones, infections, and subsequent hospitalization and rehabilitation. Throughout her career, Kirkland appeared in various movies, including “The Way We Were” with Barbra Streisand, “Revenge” with Kevin Costner, and “Bruce Almighty” with Jim Carrey.

Her most notable role was in “Anna,” where she portrayed a Czech movie star adjusting to life in the United States and mentoring a young actress, played by Paulina Porizkova. This performance earned Kirkland a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

In addition to her film work, Kirkland made appearances on television shows such as “Criminal Minds,” “Roseanne,” and “Head Case,” and was a regular on series like “Valley of the Dolls” and “Charlie’s Angels.” Born in New York City, Kirkland’s mother, a fashion editor, encouraged her to pursue modeling at a young age. Kirkland later studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts under the guidance of renowned mentors.

Kirkland was also known for her philanthropic efforts, including volunteering with the Red Cross and supporting various charitable causes. She was a dedicated advocate for individuals facing health challenges and social issues, showcasing her commitment to helping others throughout her life.
