In light of the decreasing Canadian travel to the U.S., an Alberta senator is advocating for a unique Canadian trusted traveller program to streamline airport security processes. Senator Paula Simons proposed a motion in the Senate last autumn, urging the federal government to establish this program to benefit Canadian travelers.

Simons highlighted the current reliance on the Nexus program, jointly managed with the U.S., for verified traveler status. While certain individuals like military personnel and law enforcement officers have expedited security access, the general public must go through Nexus for the same privilege, necessitating interviews in the U.S. since 2023.

The suggested Canadian program would not offer all Nexus perks but would provide an independent option for travelers uninterested in U.S. visits. The Parliamentary Budget Office estimated a cost of $7 million over five years for the proposed program, with an anticipated $50 application fee per person.

The U.S. already has its TSA PreCheck verified traveler program. Simons’ proposal has garnered support from the Canadian Airports Council, aiming to expand enrollment and establish a domestically controlled trusted traveler system.

Simons emphasized the program’s necessity not only due to reduced U.S. travel but also for human rights reasons, citing discriminatory practices in the U.S. Nexus applications. She anticipates a vote on her motion soon and is hopeful for governmental action if approved.
