Residents in Calgary were surprised to witness a black bear running through their neighborhood. Glenn Suart, an Oakridge resident, recounted the unexpected encounter as he saw the bear dart across the street and climb up a tree early in the morning. Local authorities were promptly notified, leading to the involvement of Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services.
The bear was eventually tranquilized by officers and safely relocated after a health assessment indicated no injuries. The female bear was deemed fit for release and was transported to a remote area outside Calgary to ensure its well-being and survival in the wild.
Southwest Calgary has been identified as a hotspot for bear activity due to its proximity to natural habitats and wildlife corridors. The recent capture of the black bear in Oakridge follows several sightings in the area and neighboring communities. Wildlife experts emphasize the importance of coexisting with bears by securing garbage and compost and keeping pets on-leash in natural areas to minimize potential encounters.
Although bear encounters have been reported across Alberta, recent incidents in Kananaskis Country have raised concerns. Alberta Parks issued bear warnings for specific areas following aggressive behavior towards hikers. Visitors are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for potential bear encounters until the animals retreat to their dens for hibernation in late November.
