Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre faced ongoing backlash for his critical remarks about the RCMP and its leadership. Poilievre had previously stated that some individuals should face imprisonment for the missteps of the previous Liberal government.

During an interview with the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre labeled the national police force’s leadership as “frankly just despicable” and accused them of covering up for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He suggested that several scandals during the Trudeau era warranted jail time, citing Trudeau’s acceptance of a vacation from the Aga Khan as a potential criminal offense that went unpunished due to the RCMP’s alleged negligence.

In response to the controversy, Poilievre clarified his statements to reporters, emphasizing that he did not explicitly call for Trudeau’s imprisonment but believed that certain scandals warranted severe punishment. Despite the ongoing debate around his comments, Poilievre also faced criticism from within his party, with some Conservative MPs expressing reservations about his leadership style and his handling of the RCMP issue.

While Poilievre sought to address concerns within the Conservative caucus, reports indicated internal tensions over his remarks. Several MPs questioned his leadership, with some considering whether to support him in the upcoming leadership review in January. However, publicly, Conservative MPs expressed support for Poilievre, downplaying the significance of the controversy and emphasizing their confidence in him.

The criticism extended beyond Poilievre’s comments about Trudeau, with some Conservatives also questioning his approach towards the RCMP. Despite the internal discord, Poilievre remained steadfast in his stance, calling for accountability within the RCMP leadership and defending his statements regarding past controversies and the need for transparency.
