A shooting incident occurred at Brown University’s engineering building in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, resulting in two fatalities and eight individuals in critical condition. The suspect, described as a male wearing black attire, was last seen leaving the Barus & Holley building. Law enforcement officers conducted searches across the Ivy League campus following the incident, which happened during final exams.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced a shelter-in-place order for the area surrounding the university, advising residents to remain indoors until further notice. Despite initial reports of a suspect in custody, university officials later clarified that the individual was not apprehended, prompting an ongoing search for the perpetrator. The detained person, initially considered involved, was subsequently found to have no connection to the incident.

In response to the situation, city council member John Goncalves urged community members to secure their locations and remain vigilant. The Barus & Holley building, where the shooting occurred, houses numerous laboratories and classrooms within its seven-story complex. Students nearby took safety measures upon receiving alerts, with some seeking refuge in a lab and staying hidden.

President Donald Trump acknowledged being briefed on the shooting, expressing condolences to the victims and their families. While investigations were ongoing to ascertain the details of the incident, the FBI provided support in the response efforts. Brown University, a prestigious private institution with thousands of undergraduate and graduate students, faced a challenging situation as authorities worked to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.
