The annual light display at the Flin Flon Station Museum has been a long-standing tradition in the city. This year, the display holds special significance as it is dedicated to the memory of two dedicated volunteers who passed away in 2025. Despite being smaller in scale than previous years, the museum’s building, front arch, Santa Claus, snowman statutes, train cars, and exhibits are adorned with bright lights. Notably, even the iconic Flinty statue shines in red for the holiday season.
Leading the efforts to set up the display is Joe Buie, the museum’s board chair. This year’s display is not just a festive celebration but also a tribute to the lasting contributions of Ron Dodds and Glen Eggert, who played integral roles in making the annual display a part of Flin Flon’s cultural heritage. Dodds, a board member for four decades, was the main organizer of the display, known for his enthusiasm and dedication to the project. Despite stepping down from the board in 2021, Dodds continued to help set up the lights each winter until his passing.
Eggert, another long-time volunteer, passed away in October, adding to the challenges faced by the museum this year. Buie and the remaining board members are committed to preserving the tradition and honoring the legacies of Dodds and Eggert. Buie emphasized the importance of continuing the tradition and paying tribute to the two special individuals who dedicated themselves not only to the lights but also to the museum’s overall preservation.
The light display serves as a beacon for visitors entering Flin Flon, bringing joy and a sense of pride to the community. Buie highlighted the motivation gained from seeing people’s smiles and their anticipation for the lights to be illuminated. Looking ahead, Buie hopes to recruit more volunteers to ensure the tradition endures, carrying on the memory of those who have passed on.
In memory of Dodds and Eggert, Buie aims to keep the legacy alive by welcoming new board members with fresh ideas to build on the foundation laid by the dedicated volunteers. The Flin Flon Station Museum’s Christmas light display not only entertains but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to the volunteers who played a significant role in its creation and maintenance over the years.
