The City of Hamilton is urging residents to safeguard themselves from respiratory illnesses during the upcoming flu season. With colder weather driving people indoors, a surge in respiratory illness cases is anticipated, prompting the city to advocate for a comprehensive prevention strategy.
Key preventive measures recommended by the city include receiving vaccinations for influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) if eligible. It is safe to receive all three vaccinations simultaneously. Additionally, staying home when feeling unwell, practicing frequent handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, wearing a well-fitted mask in indoor public spaces, regularly cleaning high-touch surfaces, and avoiding crowded areas are essential preventive steps.
Vaccinations for influenza and COVID-19 will be accessible to all Hamilton residents starting from October 27 at participating pharmacies and healthcare providers. For high-risk individuals such as those over 65, residents and staff of long-term care and retirement homes, and hospitalized patients, vaccines are already available. Information about pharmacies offering these vaccines can be found on the Province of Ontario’s website.
RSV vaccines are also available for individuals over 75 and those over 60 at high risk. While most individuals recover from RSV without medical intervention, severe infections can occur, especially in babies, young children, and older adults. Pregnant individuals in their third trimester, infants under eight months, and high-risk children under 24 months can also receive the RSV vaccine. Eligibility details can be checked on the city’s website for those interested.
Overall, taking proactive measures and getting vaccinated are crucial steps to protect oneself and others during the flu season to minimize the spread of respiratory illnesses.
