Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped under debris inside a historic tower in Rome after it partially collapsed during renovation work. Unfortunately, the rescued worker, identified as Octav Stroici, did not survive his injuries and passed away shortly after being extracted.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep sorrow for the loss of Stroici and extended condolences to his family and colleagues. The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed Stroici’s identity and appreciated the efforts of the rescuers who worked tirelessly for 11 hours to free him. Another Romanian worker was also rescued and is now safe.

The rescue operation faced challenges as firefighters navigated through the rubble to reach the trapped worker. Despite initial setbacks, they eventually managed to extract Stroici using a crane and transported him to the hospital. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri commended the cautious approach taken by the rescue team to prevent further collapses during the delicate operation.

The Torre dei Conti, a medieval tower undergoing restoration with an $11.1-million budget, witnessed the tragic incident. The tower, shut since 2007, was in the final stages of renovation, including structural enhancements and the installation of modern systems. As investigations into the collapse continue, Italian prosecutors are looking into potential charges related to negligent disaster and injuries.

The tower’s rich history dates back to the 13th century when it was constructed as a residence for Pope Innocent III’s family. Over the years, the tower endured damages from earthquakes and subsequent collapses. Despite the tragic outcome of the recent incident, no firefighters were harmed during the rescue operation.

Hundreds of onlookers, including tourists, witnessed the dramatic rescue efforts as firefighters worked diligently to save the trapped workers. The collapse of a section of the tower further added to the urgency of the situation, highlighting the dangers faced by the rescue teams.

As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of Octav Stroici and hopes for a thorough examination of the circumstances leading to the tragic event. The safety and stability of historical structures like the Torre dei Conti remain a focal point as authorities work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
