Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent criticism of RCMP leadership has raised concerns among some party members regarding their continued support for him. Five Conservative caucus members, speaking anonymously to Radio-Canada, expressed dissatisfaction with Poilievre’s messaging consistency post-election and questioned his suitability as a potential prime minister.
According to Radio-Canada, 10 Conservative insiders, including seven caucus members, shared their views on Poilievre. Four sources indicated uncertainty about backing him in an upcoming confidence vote, highlighting concerns over his recent statements. One source criticized Poilievre’s remarks suggesting the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as irresponsible.
During an appearance on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre alleged that Trudeau had violated the law by accepting a complimentary vacation and possibly again during the SNC-Lavalin controversy. He accused the RCMP of covering up these incidents and condemned their leadership for failing to hold the Liberal government accountable.
Critics within the party view Poilievre’s comments as detrimental to his leadership aspirations. Some MPs, who previously supported him in leadership contests, believe he remains fixated on Trudeau and struggles to move past electoral defeats. Concerned party members plan to address Poilievre’s remarks at an upcoming caucus meeting.
Despite the backlash, Poilievre retains strong support within the party. His Quebec lieutenant, Pierre Paul-Hus, defended him in a Radio-Canada interview, emphasizing Poilievre’s value to the country and Quebec. Paul-Hus clarified that Poilievre’s criticisms targeted former RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, alleging her involvement in political interference.
In a statement, Poilievre reiterated his focus on Lucki’s controversial record within the RCMP. While some perceive Poilievre’s podcast comments as a misstep, others downplay their significance, highlighting his unconventional political approach and authenticity as factors in the party’s recent electoral success.
A source close to Poilievre praised his distinctive political style, attributing the party’s strong popular vote performance in the recent federal election to his authenticity and leadership approach.
