An extradition hearing is scheduled to commence in Scotland for the individuals accused in the tragic death of a restaurateur in southwestern Ontario in August 2023. A recent investigation by CBC News has unveiled fresh details, including new images of the three men implicated in the killing of Sharif Rahman in Owen Sound.
Previously, only blurry police handout images provided glimpses of the accused individuals, with one wearing a blue T-shirt, another in orange, seen fleeing down Owen Sound’s main street in surveillance footage. Additionally, a photo of a grey Ford Escape, believed to be their escape vehicle, was released.
In December 2024, authorities announced the arrest of three suspects in Edinburgh – a father, son, and uncle – identified as Robert Evans (25), Robert Busby Evans (47), and Barry Evans (54) respectively. They face charges ranging from manslaughter to accessory after the fact, pending the extradition hearing starting on October 20.
The CBC News investigation utilized social media profiles and geolocation techniques to uncover images of the accused trio, shedding light on their activities in Canada and return to the U.K. Despite the revelations, none of the accused have entered a plea, and the allegations against them remain untested in court.
The fatal incident outside Rahman’s restaurant, The Curry House, involved a dispute over a $150 bill, leading to Rahman’s severe injuries that ultimately resulted in his death a week later. Robert Evans Jr. allegedly delivered the fatal blow, while his uncle and father face charges related to aiding his escape and facilitating his return to the U.K.
The investigation revealed that the Evans family entered Canada under false identities and engaged in fraudulent driveway repair schemes during their stay. Such activities are known to generate substantial cash amounts while evading tax authorities.
Legal experts anticipate a prolonged extradition process due to the complexities involved, emphasizing the challenges of international legal proceedings. The grieving community in Owen Sound continues to seek justice for Rahman’s death, expressing confidence that the perpetrators will be held accountable in due course.
