Three new dual-national prospects are set to join the squad for the November international window: Marcelo Flores from Tigres, Alfie Jones from Middlesbrough, and Owen Goodman from Huddersfield Town.
Ranked 28th globally, the Canadian men are scheduled to face Ecuador on November 13 at Toronto’s BMO Field and Venezuela on November 18 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Among the newcomers, 22-year-old Flores, born in Georgetown, Ont., to a Canadian mother and Mexican father, has previously played for Mexico at the senior level. However, he is eligible for a one-time FIFA switch to represent Canada due to recent regulations.
Jones, a 28-year-old English-born center back with Canadian heritage, is in the final stages of acquiring Canadian citizenship. On the other hand, Goodman, 21, born in England and raised in Canada, already holds Canadian citizenship. Despite their diverse backgrounds, these players are eager to contribute to the Canadian national team.
Marsch expressed his commitment to overseeing the team’s long-term development, emphasizing the importance of continuity and progress. The coach’s efforts to recruit Flores date back to earlier attempts by former coach John Herdman. While Flores initially chose to represent Mexico, recent developments indicate a shift in his allegiance towards Canada.
Flores, a forward, made his senior debut for Mexico at 18 and has since played three matches for the national team. His journey includes stints at Arsenal and Real Oviedo before joining Tigres. Jones, recently signed by Middlesbrough from Hull City, brings a wealth of experience from his time in the English football scene.
