Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes continues to dominate at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, securing a playoff berth as the first team with a perfect 6-0 record after defeating Yukon’s Bayly Scoffin 9-4. Lawes’ team from Winnipeg has been dominant, outscoring opponents 58-24 throughout the round-robin matches at Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
In other matches, Canada’s Kerri Einarson defeated Saskatchewan’s Jolene Campbell 10-4, Ontario’s Hailey Armstong won 7-3 against British Columbia’s Taylor Reese-Hansen, and Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens claimed a 10-4 victory over Nicky Kaufman of the Northwest Territories.
Einarson, a four-time Scotties champion, sits in second place behind Lawes in Pool A standings at 5-1, followed by Armstrong and Stevens at 3-2. The top three teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs starting Friday.
Armstrong has been Lawes’ toughest competitor, with a close 6-6 tie in the eighth end on Sunday that turned in Lawes’ favor with a five-point score in the ninth. Armstrong’s win over Reese-Hansen on Tuesday was crucial for the home province.
Lawes, a two-time Olympic champion, earned a spot in the event after falling to Pool B leader Beth Peterson in the Manitoba championship. Her team’s hard work and strategic planning have paid off, with lead Kristin Gordon expressing confidence in their performance.
Peterson leads Pool B with a 5-0 record, narrowly winning 8-7 against Prince Edward Island’s Amanda Power in an extra end. Nova Scotia’s Christina Black also had a successful day, winning two matches to move to 5-1.
The competition is heating up as teams vie for a spot in the final on Sunday, with the winning team set to represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in Calgary in March.
