Masked Israeli settlers launched stones and set fire to dairy trucks, agricultural land, and Bedouin structures, resulting in injuries to four individuals in the latest wave of settler assaults in the West Bank. Videos circulating on social media depicted two burned trucks engulfed in flames, along with a nearby structure ablaze.
Israeli military forces quickly intervened in Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf following an assault by numerous masked Israeli civilians on Palestinians and property. The army reported treating four injured Palestinians and successfully dispersing the confrontation.
The Palestinian Red Crescent disclosed that they attended to three individuals who had been assaulted with sticks and stones. Israeli police confirmed the arrest of four Israeli suspects linked to the incident, describing the occurrences as acts of “extremist violence.”
Later, near the Baron Industrial Zone, where some of the masked settlers regathered, they clashed with soldiers and inflicted damage on a military vehicle, as per the army’s statement.
Accusations have been levied by Palestinians and human rights activists against the Israeli army and police for their perceived failure to prevent settler attacks. Palestinian Minister Muayyad Shaaban, who heads the Palestinian Authority government’s Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, condemned the attacks as part of a strategic move to displace Palestinians from their lands, blaming Israel for providing protection and immunity to the settlers.
Shaaban called for sanctions on groups supporting the “colonial settlement terrorism project.” Notably, political factions led by far-right Israeli settlers wield significant influence within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a hardline settler with previous convictions linked to terror group support and racism incitement, oversees the police force. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, an advocate for annexing a large portion of the West Bank, authorized the construction of over 5,600 settler housing units this year, a record high for annual approvals.
The escalating settler attacks coincide with the olive harvest season for Palestinians, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reporting a surge in settler assaults, recording at least 264 incidents in October alone, the highest monthly count since tracking began in 2006. The UN agency highlighted that over 9,600 such attacks have been documented since 2006, including about 1,500 this year, with a focus on the olive harvest resulting in numerous injuries and damage to trees and saplings.
Despite recent ceasefire efforts in Gaza brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, the situation in the West Bank remains volatile and unaddressed. Concerns persist that settler violence could exacerbate the regional security landscape. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the recent attacks during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris, emphasizing the destabilizing impact of settler violence and settlement expansion on the West Bank’s stability.
The Canadian government’s response to settler violence included sanctions against Ben-Gvir and Smotrich earlier this year as part of efforts to curb extremist activities. Moreover, Canada and several allies made a diplomatic move to recognize the state of Palestine, aligning with the goal of preserving the potential for a two-state solution.
The West Bank, home to 2.7 million Palestinians, plays a pivotal role in the vision of a future Palestinian state alongside Israel. However, the rapid expansion of settlements by successive Israeli administrations has fragmented the land, with over half a million Israeli settlers residing in the territory. While settlements are considered illegal under international law by the United Nations and most nations, Israel justifies them citing historical ties and security imperatives.
Israeli authorities aim to further expand settlements, exemplified by the controversial E1 settlement plan approved in August, which includes constructing more than 3,400 settler housing units to connect an existing settlement to Jerusalem. This move has raised concerns among Palestinians about territorial isolation and jeopardizing their statehood aspirations.
