The NHL has decided to suspend Mitch Love for the rest of the season following an inquiry into allegations that emerged while he was being considered for various head coaching positions across the league.
Subsequently, the Washington Capitals terminated Love’s employment. He had been working as an assistant under coach Spencer Carbery for the past two years and was placed on leave last month pending the investigation. The specifics of the investigation have not been disclosed.
In an announcement confirming Love’s immediate dismissal, the Capitals emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards of behavior and responsibility within the organization. Love had been absent from team activities since the development camp in July.
The NHL stated that Love’s suspension was due to engaging in behavior deemed harmful to the league, pending a comprehensive investigation. Love may seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season, subject to specific conditions.
Love, who celebrated his 41st birthday in June, was reportedly a serious contender for coaching positions with the Pittsburgh and Seattle teams, among others. Prior to joining Washington, he served as the head coach for the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate from 2021 to 2023.
