Courtney Deveau and her partner Zachary Legacy were discussing the moose warning signs and barriers on the road they were driving on just before colliding with a moose that wrecked their Volkswagen Golf. The incident occurred in early December on Highway 7 near Geary, N.B. Deveau, 28, sustained severe injuries and was taken to the hospital after being kicked in the head by the moose. She is still in the recovery process three weeks later, with her family anticipating a lengthy recovery period.

Legacy, who was behind the wheel, witnessed the moose’s front legs hitting Deveau’s head multiple times as the animal struggled to free itself from the car before succumbing. He attempted to maneuver in front of the moose but was hindered by his seatbelt, causing him to feel overwhelmed and powerless on the dark, chilly highway until help arrived.

After the collision, Deveau stopped responding, leading to a period of silence until she received medical attention at the hospital. Legacy sustained minor injuries, including a bruised forearm and some scratches. Recalling the incident, Legacy expressed astonishment that both of them survived, given the significant damage to their vehicle.

Reflecting on the event, Legacy pondered what he could have done differently but remains uncertain. He speculated that better lighting on the highway might have prevented the collision. The Grand-Bay Westfield RCMP confirmed the crash but did not disclose further details at the time of reporting.

Jennifer Deveau, Courtney’s mother, received news of the accident from a stranger who used Courtney’s phone to contact her, leaving her in a panicked state. Upon arriving at the Saint John Regional Hospital, she learned that her daughter had sustained a traumatic brain injury, a fractured jaw, and broken ribs, necessitating placement in the intensive care unit.

Courtney was placed in an induced coma and has been gradually showing signs of progress, such as squeezing the doctor’s hand, communicating verbally, and engaging in physical activities with assistance. Despite moments of frustration when Courtney fails to recognize her family, Deveau remains optimistic about her daughter’s recovery and is grateful for each milestone achieved.

Deveau described Courtney as an active individual dedicated to community service and fitness. Courtney’s absence at their shared apartment in Saint John is deeply felt by Deveau, who highlighted her daughter’s vibrant personality and resilience. The family continues to hope and pray for Courtney’s complete healing, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the impact of her brain injury on her future.

Legacy acknowledged that the accident has altered his perspective on life, emphasizing the fragility and preciousness of life. He expressed gratitude towards the bystanders who assisted them and reflected on the value of cherished moments with Courtney. The incident has prompted him to appreciate their shared experiences and cherish their time together.
