Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the significance of “free trade” among “free nations” during his speech at the Centre for Policy Studies in London. Drawing inspiration from historical figures like Adam Smith and Winston Churchill, Poilievre called for Canada to enhance its domestic strength to gain solid leverage internationally through trade agreements with like-minded nations.

In his address, Poilievre highlighted the need for free trade with other democratic countries and touched on familiar themes such as inflation and balanced budgets. This speech marked a shift in focus for the Conservative leader towards addressing global trade challenges, including those posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

During the event, Poilievre proposed a closer economic relationship with Commonwealth countries, specifically Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. He suggested eliminating regulatory obstacles for professionals to work across borders and advocated for mutual recognition of product safety standards among the four nations.

Furthermore, Poilievre recommended collaboration in defense procurement, energy, and mineral extraction among the CANZUK nations. His vision received a positive response from attendees, including former U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss, who lauded his defense of capitalism and optimism for center-right solutions.

As Poilievre continues his international tour, Prime Minister Mark Carney focuses on strengthening ties with Australia, India, and Japan. Poilievre is scheduled to visit Germany next to engage with business leaders in the European nation.

The objective of Poilievre’s overseas engagements, as noted by communications expert Andrew MacDougall, is to bolster his credibility in global affairs, an area where Carney holds a comparative advantage due to his extensive experience in finance and foreign relations. Despite Poilievre’s seasoned political career, he aims to enhance his profile on the world stage through strategic diplomatic initiatives.
