A Pokémon card deal recently made headlines as it sold for a record-breaking $16.5 million US, with Whitbourne, N.L., playing a significant role in the transaction. Peter Petipas, an auctioneer at Goldin Auctions residing in the Avalon Peninsula community, described his involvement as a surreal experience.
Initially expecting to break the trading card record at $13 million, Petipas was surprised when the final bid exceeded $15 million, setting a new all-time collectibles record. The rare Pikachu Illustrator card, featuring the iconic Pokémon character, was previously owned by American social media influencer Logan Paul and was eventually sold for approximately $22 million CAD after weeks of being on the auction block.
Goldin Auctions CEO Ken Goldin, who is a friend of Paul, had been persuading him to consign this particular card with the company for some time. Petipas, who has been part of various auctions, expressed that the auction process, which included a box of first edition base-set Pokémon cards, was a spectacle with winners present in the room.
The high price tag of the Pikachu card can be attributed to its rarity, as only a few dozen were ever made, and Paul’s card was the only one highly graded by the German authentication company PSA. Paul, who was present during the auction, expressed excitement and shock at the sale result.
The Pokémon franchise, established 30 years ago, has grossed over $100 billion US, surpassing Disney’s media franchises by a significant margin. Petipas highlighted the continuous growth potential of the franchise through new generations, video games, merchandise, and regular releases of trading cards, attracting new fans and customers.
As fans mature, they often have disposable income to indulge in nostalgic purchases, driving the demand and value of Pokémon memorabilia. The enduring popularity and innovation within the franchise indicate a promising future.
