Roger Federer has been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his inaugural year of eligibility, the Hall announced on Wednesday. Federer, the first player to secure 20 Grand Slam singles titles, was the sole candidate to garner the necessary support in the player category for the Hall’s 2026 class.
Candidates become eligible for consideration after a five-year hiatus from the tour and must receive a minimum of 75% of votes from a diverse group that includes tennis media, historians, industry figures, Hall members, and fans. The specifics of the voting results are not disclosed by the Hall.
In addition to Federer, TV announcer and former player Mary Carillo was elected in the contributor category. The Hall’s induction ceremony is scheduled for August.
Reflecting on his achievement, Federer expressed humility, stating, “I’ve always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me. To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling.”
Throughout his career, Federer clinched a career Grand Slam, amassing victories at Wimbledon, the Australian Open, the U.S. Open, and the French Open. Despite his monumental success, Federer admitted in an interview with The Associated Press, “I didn’t predict I was going to have this many majors. I was hoping to maybe have one, to be quite honest, at the very beginning of my career.”
