Trump responded by threatening to increase tariffs on Canada by 10%, citing the ad’s alleged fraudulent nature. Kaine, in an interview with Rosemary Barton Live, expressed disappointment in Trump’s behavior, labeling it as “childish” and emphasizing the need to return to the negotiating table for the benefit of the American economy.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the removal of the ad from U.S. screens following Trump’s backlash. Kaine, along with Republican Senator Rand Paul, introduced legislation to terminate the national emergency invoked by Trump for imposing tariffs on Canada and other countries.
There is also a legal battle looming, with Trump seeking Supreme Court intervention to overturn a ruling deeming his tariff actions unconstitutional. Kaine believes mounting economic pressure will compel Trump to resume trade talks with Canada.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Ford’s actions, calling them interference in U.S. affairs and damaging to relations with Ontario. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is focused on strengthening trade partnerships in Southeast Asia.
Carney emphasized the importance of reliable partnerships and reiterated Canada’s commitment to negotiating with the U.S. in the best interest of Canadian workers. Additionally, Canada aims to diversify its exports away from the U.S. in the coming years.
