Titi Tijani expressed immense joy at the inauguration of Winnipeg’s first mosque constructed by the Nigerian Muslim community, calling it a realization of their aspirations. The Al-Haqq Masjid, located at 500 Dovercourt Dr. in Winnipeg’s Whyte Ridge neighborhood, is the inaugural mosque in Manitoba established by and for the Nigerian Muslim community, with “Al-Haqq” meaning “truth” in Arabic.

Funded entirely by community contributions through the Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada Inc., this milestone marks a significant progress for the Nigerian Muslim community in Manitoba. Tijani, who initiated a prayer group in her home due to the absence of a dedicated mosque 37 years ago, highlighted the remarkable growth of the community over the years.

The new mosque witnessed a full congregation during the official opening, signifying the community’s unity and evolving needs. Tijani emphasized the inclusivity of the mosque, welcoming individuals of all beliefs and offering educational and community programs to promote understanding of Islam.

Anticipating further mosque developments in Winnipeg as the Muslim population continues to expand, Tijani emphasized the necessity of such communal spaces for the city’s diverse population. With a fundraising target of $1.5 million, the Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada successfully collected all required funds solely from community members.

Imam Yunusa Salami, the spiritual leader of the newly opened mosque, emphasized the importance of accommodating the growing Muslim population in Manitoba. Celebrations ensued as the doors of the mosque officially opened, fulfilling the long-held dream of the community. Salami expressed his gratitude for witnessing this momentous occasion, marking it as a significant milestone for the Nigerian Muslim community in Winnipeg.
