A young chess prodigy, Michelle Zhang, showcased her skills by challenging world No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura at the Maritime Open Chess Championship in Summerside, P.E.I. Despite being only 12 years old, Zhang, a Halifax resident who has been playing chess since the age of 6, held her ground against Nakamura for 65 moves in their first-round match.

Nakamura, a renowned chess player and popular online streamer with over three million subscribers, surprised participants at the tournament with his unexpected appearance. Zhang, a fan of Nakamura’s streams, was taken aback when she discovered he would be her opponent, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.

Described as a chess celebrity among players and fans at the event, Nakamura likened his experience at the tournament to giving back to the chess community and reminiscing about his own early days in the game. He explained that his participation in the Maritime Open was crucial for his qualification into the prestigious 2026 FIDE Candidates tournament.

Following the match, Nakamura praised Zhang’s performance in a post-match YouTube recap, highlighting her strategic skills and offering constructive feedback. Zhang, eager to learn and improve, found the recap educational and was pleased to hear that Nakamura had felt the pressure during their game.

With a significant age gap of 25 years between them, Zhang remains focused on honing her skills and continuing to progress in the game without specific aspirations beyond improving her gameplay.
