Brad Spence fondly recalls his visit to the BHP Jansen Discovery Lodge in Saskatchewan, a potash mine site, where he was unexpectedly embraced by a young woman who expressed immense gratitude for his assistance. In his role as the director of training and employment at George Gordon Developments Limited, Spence has successfully helped numerous individuals secure employment opportunities.
This commendable work earned Spence a Respect award at the inaugural Saskatchewan Okimaw awards ceremony on September 12, 2025, in Regina, which aims to honor Indigenous male leaders. The emotional encounter with the woman at the mine site, who tearfully thanked him for enabling her to obtain a job and subsequently buy a car to travel with her children, deeply touched Spence.
Reflecting on the incident, Spence emphasized that the woman’s initiative and determination were the driving forces behind her success, not his own actions. Having previously worked with renowned bands like Rush and the Backstreet Boys worldwide, Spence returned to Saskatchewan and dedicated himself to assisting individuals in finding employment opportunities.
The Okimaw awards, originating in Alberta and brought to Saskatchewan by Chelsa Racette, celebrate Indigenous men across various fields, recognizing their contributions to society. Racette praised Spence for his commitment to equality and community upliftment, citing his deserving nature for the respect award.
Despite his initial doubts upon being nominated for the award, Spence expressed humility at being recognized among individuals with impressive academic backgrounds and achievements. His diverse experiences in the music industry across 22 countries, coupled with his educational background in psychology and Indian studies, have equipped him to guide individuals towards meaningful employment opportunities.
Spence highlighted the importance of integrity and responsibility in leadership, emphasizing the need to be available beyond conventional working hours and to act decisively when required. As a leader, he aims to inspire others to progress and realize their full potential, emphasizing the significance of setting a positive example for future generations to follow.
