On Wednesday, the NDP leadership race progresses with the party’s inaugural leadership candidate forum featuring five contenders. The event, organized by the Canadian Labour Congress and moderated by its president, Bea Bruske, aims to offer a “worker-first forum,” instead of a traditional debate.

The forum is anticipated to provide insights into the leading candidate in the NDP leadership race. The five sanctioned candidates set to appear on stage include:

Rob Ashton, a B.C. dockworker and national president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada, who positions himself as a “working-class labour candidate” rather than a typical politician. Known for his straightforward and unfiltered communication style, Ashton’s authenticity has garnered attention in the campaign.

Tanille Johnston, the youngest candidate at 38, is a social worker and city councillor from Campbell River, B.C. She advocates for a bold and progressive transformation of the NDP, emphasizing environmental concerns and renewable energy projects.

Avi Lewis, a well-known TV presenter and reporter, pledges a candid and policy-focused campaign. His proposals include a wealth tax and a public option for essential services. Lewis, married to author Naomi Klein, aims to revitalize the NDP while championing environmental causes.

Heather McPherson, an Edmonton NDP MP, is seen as the establishment candidate with substantial party support. She emphasizes the need for inclusive conversations and a broader party approach to engage diverse voices within the NDP.

Tony McQuail, a farmer from Ontario, prioritizes environmental sustainability in his leadership bid. Advocating for collaboration between the NDP and the Green Party, McQuail seeks to amplify environmental issues within the party’s platform.

Despite not being an official candidate, activist Yves Engler is eager to participate in the forum. Engler, known for his pro-worker platform, is working towards meeting the candidacy requirements despite facing fundraising challenges.

The NDP leadership race showcases a diverse field of candidates with distinct visions for the party’s future, emphasizing worker rights, environmental sustainability, and progressive policies. The forum could offer valuable insights into the contenders’ leadership styles and priorities.
