Residents across British Columbia’s north and Interior, along with parts of Alberta and Vancouver Island, were left puzzled by a mysterious object in the night sky on Tuesday. Between 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. PT, numerous witnesses observed a large, white shape moving slowly across the horizon before vanishing from sight.
Videos capturing the unusual sighting were shared widely on social media, sparking a wave of speculation and intrigue. Sarah and Jared Siemens from Vanderhoof, B.C., who had recently discussed the existence of UFOs with their son, were amazed by the sighting, with Sarah remarking that it reinforced the possibility of believing in such phenomena.
Residents from various regions, including Williams Lake, Prince George, Fort St. John, the Nass Valley, Kamloops, Oliver, Vancouver Island, and Sherwood Park, Alberta, reported witnessing the spectacle. People described the experience as both surreal and captivating, fostering lively conversations about the potential origins of the enigmatic object.
Astronomer Malhar Kendurkar, president of the Prince George Astronomical Observatory, identified the object as likely being SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which had been launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California earlier that evening. The rocket’s unique appearance, resembling a glowing cloud due to atmospheric conditions, contributed to the mystique surrounding the sighting.
Experts highlighted the increasing activity in the night sky, attributing the rise in sightings of unusual phenomena to the proliferation of drones, private satellites, and rockets like those operated by SpaceX. Michael Unger, director of programming at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, emphasized the importance of documenting and sharing such sightings to enhance scientific understanding of celestial events.
As nighttime skies become busier with human-made objects, instances of unexplained sightings are becoming more commonplace, prompting curiosity and reflection on the vastness of the cosmos. The incident served as a reminder of the mysteries that continue to unfold above us, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the universe.
