Newly released documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, made public by Republicans in the U.S. Congress, show that Donald Trump’s name appears over 1,500 times. However, most of these mentions do not provide any new or significant connections between Epstein and the current U.S. president. The documents, totaling 20,000 pages, include emails, deposition transcripts, and news clippings from the estate.
Using the Google application Pinpoint for analysis, CBC News found that Trump’s name is frequently cited in references to social media posts related to the 2016 Brexit referendum and in a 100-page public financial disclosure report Trump filed in 2017. One peculiar item in the documents is a short video showing a dog chewing on a Trump stuffed toy, while a Hillary Clinton toy remains untouched, although the reason for including this video in the files is unclear.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released three emails from the documents, suggesting that Trump had knowledge of Epstein’s activities. In contrast, emails from Republicans indicate that Epstein attempted to position himself as a source of insight on Trump to the Kremlin in 2018, including offering advice to Russian officials.
While Trump and Epstein were acquainted in the 1990s, their friendship soured before Epstein faced allegations of sexually abusing minors. Epstein died in 2019 while facing charges of child sex trafficking. Key figures in Trump’s circle, including Vice-President J.D. Vance, FBI director Kash Patel, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, have advocated for further transparency in the Epstein case during Biden’s presidency.
