Max Scherzer, a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, is set to make history by being the only pitcher alive to start two winner-take-all Game 7s in the World Series. Scheduled to pitch on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Scherzer will be facing off against the Dodgers’ star player, Shohei Ohtani.

In the 2019 World Series, Scherzer previously started Game 7, receiving a cortisone injection for a nerve issue near his neck. Despite a rocky start, he left after five innings with his team trailing by two runs before the Washington Nationals eventually rallied to win 6-2 in Houston.

Only a few players in baseball history have started multiple winner-take-all Game 7s in the World Series, such as Bob Gibson, Lew Burdette, and Don Larsen. Scherzer, aged 41, signed a $15.5 million one-year contract with the Blue Jays, aiming to secure his third World Series ring after winning with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. The veteran pitcher has been actively sharing his experience and knowledge with his new team.

Throughout the season, Scherzer faced challenges with injuries, but he showcased his capabilities during the American League Championship Series, winning a crucial game against Seattle. Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Scherzer’s leadership and readiness for Game 7, highlighting his valuable contributions on and off the field.

On the other side, the Dodgers’ decision to start Ohtani in Game 7 aligns with a rule change that allows pitchers who start as designated hitters to stay in the game after pitching. Ohtani, known for his versatility, has been a key player for the Dodgers, excelling both at the plate and on the mound during the World Series.

As the Toronto Blue Jays and the L.A. Dodgers gear up for the decisive Game 7, baseball fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome, with both teams aiming to secure a historic victory in this high-stakes matchup.
