Colleen Jones and I shared a serene Thursday evening in her Halifax home on Newton Avenue. The warm glow of the setting sun filled the room, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Colleen’s residence is a tribute to curling and her beloved family, adorned with books on life mastery and inspiration. A framed quote above the fireplace reads, “Always believe something wonderful is about to happen.”

Relaxing on the floor, Colleen, who recently underwent emergency hip surgery, was determined to regain her strength and return to the ice. Despite having crutches, she opted to push herself without them. During our interview that evening, she emphasized surrendering to life’s uncertainties and cherishing each moment.

Colleen, known for her positive mindset and spiritual beliefs, faced a private battle with cancer for nearly three years. She tackled the illness with the same resilience she displayed in her curling career, always staying focused and determined. Despite her health struggles, she continued to live life to the fullest, shielding her loved ones from unnecessary worry.

Her approach to curling, incorporating sports psychology and rigorous training, set her apart in the sport. Colleen’s dedication to physical fitness, mental preparation, and nutrition was ahead of her time in the curling world. She aimed to instill a champion’s mindset in her sons, emphasizing the joy of sportsmanship and the value of competition.

Colleen’s legacy in curling spans five decades, marked by numerous championships and accolades. Her unwavering commitment to the sport earned her a place in the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and the Order of Canada. Beyond her athletic achievements, Colleen’s coaching role with Team Purcell brought her immense pride, especially when guiding them to success at the Brier.

As an esteemed CBC broadcaster, Colleen covered nine Olympics, showcasing her passion for storytelling and connecting with diverse communities. Her vibrant personality and zest for life left a lasting impact on those she encountered. Hosting “That Curling Show” with Colleen was a joyous experience, filled with laughter and shared adventures.

In our final moments together, Colleen emphasized the importance of embracing life’s possibilities and maintaining a positive outlook. Her enduring message to always believe in the magic of what lies ahead resonates with all who knew her. Colleen’s remarkable spirit and unwavering optimism will continue to inspire others long after her passing.
