Several members of the Chaldean community in Windsor gathered at the intersection of Marentette Avenue and Wyandotte Street East to celebrate the naming of a section of Marentette as Chaldean Way. The Holy Family Chaldean Catholic Church is located at this intersection, making the event particularly significant for the community.
Adel Salman, the public relations manager for the Chaldean Association of Windsor, expressed excitement about the recognition, stating that it signifies the city acknowledging the contributions of the Chaldean people to Windsor. The Chaldeans are Indigenous to Mesopotamia and have a long history in countries like Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran.
The City of Windsor proclaimed the Chaldean Babylonia New Year in 2024, recognizing the community’s heritage and struggles. Currently, around 22,000 Chaldeans reside in Windsor, contributing significantly to the city’s economy and culture.
Councillor Angelo Marigani, who attended the street naming ceremony, commended the Chaldean community for its positive impact on Windsor, expressing optimism for the city’s diverse future. The event was well-attended, reflecting a shared pride in Windsor’s multicultural identity.
