A ukulele ensemble from Grand Manan is dedicated to bringing joy to the local community. The group, known as Misty Island Strummers, was founded by Anne Cairns, who received a ukulele as a gift from her sister in 2019. Cairns, a retired physician who returned to the island after feeling unfulfilled on the mainland, found solace in playing the instrument during the COVID lockdown.
Inspired by former choir members with ukulele skills, Cairns gathered a group of like-minded individuals who shared her passion for music. Within eight months, the ensemble grew to 20 members and began performing at nursing homes and community events. Member Mary Hawkins expressed gratitude for the sense of camaraderie and musical connection the group provides.
Hawkins highlighted the dedication of Cairns, emphasizing the group’s commitment to regular practice sessions. She noted that music and community spirit are integral to the group’s ethos, fostering a supportive environment where members look out for each other.
The Misty Island Strummers, predominantly composed of seniors, aim to combat loneliness and keep their minds active by learning new musical skills. Cairns emphasized the cognitive benefits of playing an instrument, suggesting it could help in staving off dementia. The group engages in various community activities, such as fundraising for local causes and offering ukulele tutorials to inspire others to join in the musical journey.
