Dan Sokolowski, a veteran in the movie industry, has a long history of consuming large quantities of popcorn. Having worked in the movie business for nearly two decades, he jokingly mentioned that popcorn has been a staple in his daily meals. However, with his recent retirement as the producer of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival, Sokolowski anticipates a significant reduction in his popcorn intake. Upon retiring at the age of 65, Sokolowski expressed that while he is stepping down from his festival responsibilities, he is not retiring from life itself.

During his tenure at the festival, Sokolowski reminisced about various highlights, including organizing a street festival where he personally prepared 900 perogies. He emphasized the joy of bringing filmmakers from different regions to Dawson City and providing a platform for emerging local talent. Sokolowski expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the community, emphasizing Dawson City’s vibrant festival culture and the dedication of volunteers.

Looking ahead, Sokolowski remains uncertain about his future endeavors but is certain about one thing – his commitment to Dawson City, a place he and his partner chose to call home due to their fondness for the town. As Sokolowski transitions into retirement, the festival welcomes a new leader, Arcane Perry, who has shadowed Sokolowski to learn the intricacies of the role. Perry, a former student at the School of Visual Art in Dawson, is enthusiastic about continuing and expanding upon Sokolowski’s legacy at the festival.

Expressing excitement about the opportunity, Perry aims to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the festival. They acknowledge Sokolowski’s success in fostering an inclusive filmmaking environment and express a commitment to amplifying the voices of BIPOC, queer, and female filmmakers. Perry, who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community, views it as their responsibility to ensure that underrepresented voices receive the platform they deserve.
