Friday the 13th proved to be a fortunate day for Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, as he clinched his eighth gold medal at the Milan Cortina Olympics, matching the all-time Winter Games record. The Norwegian cross-country skiing sensation secured victory in the men’s 10-kilometer interval start race, marking his third gold at the 2026 Games.
Having achieved this milestone with three races remaining, Klaebo now stands alongside three retired Norwegian athletes, Marit Bjoergen, Bjoern Daehlie, and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. Notably, Klaebo has a positive association with Friday the 13th, having proposed to his girlfriend, Pernille Doesvik, on the same date last year.
Expressing his fondness for the supposedly unlucky day, Klaebo remarked, “I think I like Friday the 13th. It’s a good day.” Throughout the ongoing Olympics, Klaebo has performed exceptionally well in various events.
The recent win held special significance for Klaebo, as he excels in races where he competes directly against rivals. Clocking 20 minutes and 36.2 seconds, Klaebo finished ahead of Mathis Desloges from France and Einar Hedegart of Norway, who struggled on the final hill.
In a post-race statement, Klaebo expressed his satisfaction with his strategic approach, emphasizing his ability to conserve energy for crucial moments. The victory was celebrated not only by Klaebo but also by the French camp, where Desloges claimed a silver medal in his Olympic debut.
The race took place amidst picturesque surroundings in northern Italy, with mild temperatures and stunning mountain views. Organizers had prepared the course with salt the day before, providing favorable conditions for early starters like Klaebo.
The race drew attention and accolades from fans and officials, with Norwegian supporters displaying national pride and well-wishes flooding in for Klaebo. The Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Stoere, commended Klaebo’s performance on social media, highlighting his exceptional dedication and hard work.
The event saw Canadian athletes like Tom Stephen, Remi Drolet from Rossland, B.C., and Max Hollmann from Thunder Bay, Ont., competing, with Stephen finishing 9th. Klaebo’s remarkable achievements continue to captivate audiences and inspire admiration for his relentless pursuit of excellence in cross-country skiing.
