Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson faced a defeat in the quarterfinals of the beach volleyball world championships in Adelaide, Australia. The duo, Olympic silver medallists, was defeated by Brazil’s Rebecca Cavalcante and Carol Solberg with a score of 2-1 (17-21, 21-18, 9-15).
Prior to this match, the Canadians had maintained an undefeated record and had not lost a set throughout the week. Wilkerson acknowledged that Brazil’s strong performance led to mistakes on Canada’s part that were not typical of their earlier tournament play. She mentioned that the intense match highlighted areas for improvement and emphasized the need for better organization.
Brazil dominated in attack points with a score of 38-31 and out-blocked Canada 4-1. Meanwhile, Canada excelled in aces, ending with four compared to Brazil’s two.
Humana-Paredes expressed disappointment in the team’s defensive performance, noting a lack of crucial defensive plays that had been a strength for them during the week. Despite the loss, both players saw it as a learning opportunity to enhance their game in the future.
The Canadian duo finished in fifth place at the tournament, acknowledging the challenges of the post-Olympic year. Wilkerson emphasized the team’s resilience and hard work in maintaining competitiveness despite the tough season.
The beach volleyball world championships will conclude on Sunday with the medal matches.
