A man from Quebec, aged 64, has made history in North America by being the first recipient of a regenerated liver. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to significantly increase the number of livers available for transplant, with projections indicating dozens of additional livers could be made available in its inaugural year.
Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, had been grappling with liver issues for around 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Just before undergoing surgery for a liver transplant, he received surprising news from his doctor that the organ had been regenerated using a new machine at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).
Describing the revelation as akin to a gift, Landry expressed gratitude for the innovative technology called Liver Assist, which enables doctors to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before transplantation. This approach allowed Landry to receive a liver that may have been considered too risky for conventional use.
Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation during organ transport. Subsequently, doctors can transition to a blood-based solution to assess the liver’s functionality in conditions simulating the human body.
Hénault noted that the technology holds promise in enhancing the pool of transplantable livers. Collaborating with Transplant Québec, the CHUM team identified previously declined livers that could be salvaged using this innovative method. Initial estimates suggest that approximately 20 to 24 additional livers could be available for transplant in the technology’s debut year, with the potential for further growth as the system gains wider acceptance.
The application of Liver Assist also shows promise in reducing complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for suitable patients. Landry’s swift recovery post-transplant further underscores the technology’s efficacy, with his blood work exhibiting better-than-anticipated results within a day of the procedure.
As Landry continues his recuperation in Montreal, he eagerly anticipates returning to Gaspésie to resume his recovery and reunite with his family, including his grandson and horses. Reflecting on his journey, Landry hopes his experience will inspire conversations about organ donation, emphasizing the critical need for donated organs to complement even the most advanced medical technologies. In his words, “if you have a horse without a rider, you don’t have a ride.”
