Cineplex has disclosed plans to explore a potential sale while introducing Bill Walker, the former head of Landmark Cinemas, as its new CEO. The company’s board expressed confidence in its future but is actively assessing various options to enhance shareholder value through a Strategic Review process.

In the announcement of Walker’s appointment, the Board confirmed the initiation of a Strategic Review aimed at maximizing value for all stakeholders. This comprehensive assessment may include the consideration of a potential sale among other alternatives. Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been appointed as co-financial advisers for the strategic review, as per Cineplex.

As Canada’s largest cinema chain, Cineplex operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide, employing over 10,000 individuals across its entertainment venues. The company had previously faced a sale in 2019 when a proposed $2.8 billion acquisition by the U.K.-based Cineworld Group PLC was terminated.

Former CEO Ellis Jacob will provide advisory support to the board during the strategic review process. Chair of the board, Phyllis Yaffe, highlighted Cineplex’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets, suggesting that the current market valuation may not fully reflect the company’s potential.

Walker, who led Landmark Cinemas and facilitated its sale to Kinepolis in 2017, expressed his backing for the strategic review. He emphasized his commitment to driving operational excellence, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, and delivering superior outcomes for shareholders, regardless of the review’s outcome.
