A tragic incident involving a bear in northern Saskatchewan claimed the life of a 27-year-old man, according to the Ministry of Community Safety. The investigation is still in its preliminary phase, with limited details disclosed by the government. The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Wollaston Lake detachment received a report of a sudden death at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Douglas Clark, an expert from the University of Saskatchewan, highlighted the rarity of fatal bear encounters in Saskatchewan but emphasized the potential risks associated with close bear interactions. He recommended the use of bear spray in regions like the far north where bears are active, drawing from his personal experiences with black bears and a recent encounter with a predatory bear.
The incident occurred near Points North, approximately 700 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon. Contrary to initial reports, the Points North Group of Companies clarified that the fatal incident occurred near Nordbye Lake, located 78 kilometers from Points North Landing, not at the airstrip as previously indicated.
This unfortunate event marks the fourth recorded fatality resulting from a bear encounter in Saskatchewan. Previous incidents include the 2020 death of Stephanie Blais near Buffalo Narrows and the 1983 fatalities of two men near Nipawin Provincial Park. In 2005, Kenton Carnegie, a 22-year-old student, was tragically killed near Points North in a rare fatal wolf attack.
Authorities urge the public to maintain a safe distance from bears, avoid provoking them, and retreat calmly if encountered. Speaking softly, avoiding direct eye contact, and signaling non-aggression can deter bear attacks. The Conservation Officer Service, the Wildlife Human Attack Response Team, the RCMP, and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service are collaborating on the investigation.
As spring brings bears out of hibernation, caution is advised for those in bear-populated areas. Dante Tabacu of Pilot’s Lodge emphasized that black bears are typically inquisitive rather than aggressive but stressed the importance of vigilance during encounters with these animals.
